About the role
This is a full-time, on-site FPGA Design Engineer opportunity located in Concord, CA. You will lead FPGA-based logic and firmware development for high-performance inertial sensing systems, working across the full product lifecycle from first prototype through volume production. This is a hands-on engineering role suited to someone who enjoys solving complex timing, verification, and firmware-integration challenges. The position is 100% in-office and includes occasional travel of less than 10% to support a secondary facility.
Key responsibilities
You will design, develop, and test FPGA firmware and digital logic using VHDL, Verilog, or SystemVerilog, and architect SoC-based solutions using industry-standard tools including Xilinx Vivado, Intel Quartus, and Microsemi Libero IDE. You will implement FPGA-based digital signal processing components such as digital filters, transforms, and multipliers, and optimize implementations for speed, power, and resource utilization. You will conduct simulation, verification, and debugging of FPGA designs, and support system integration and hardware bring-up using lab equipment including oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and temperature chambers. You will assist with early-build fabrication support, help transfer designs into manufacturing, apply DFM and DFT principles, and support manufacturing test development and EMC compliance activities. You will also collaborate with firmware, hardware, and systems teams across the full product lifecycle and develop and maintain documentation for FPGA and firmware designs, implementations, and test results.
Required skills
The ideal candidate holds a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related field and brings a minimum of five years of experience in FPGA design, simulation, and embedded firmware development. You must be proficient in VHDL, Verilog, or SystemVerilog and experienced with FPGA development tools including Xilinx Vivado, Microsemi Libero IDE, Intel Quartus, and Lattice, as well as SoC devices such as Microchip PolarFire. Strong proficiency in C and C++ for firmware development is required, along with experience in signal processing and high-speed communication interfaces including SPI and I2C at minimum, with PCIe and Ethernet preferred. You must possess knowledge of FPGA verification and testing methodologies and the ability to design and implement advanced DSP algorithms. U.S. citizenship or Permanent Residence is required, and this position is subject to ITAR compliance.
Experience required
Minimum 5 years FPGA design, simulation, and embedded firmware development; Bachelor's or Master's in Electrical/Computer Engineering or related field; U.S. citizenship or Permanent Residence required; ITAR compliance clearance needed
Preferred qualifications
Experience designing mixed-signal hardware circuits including ADCs, DACs, clock circuits, DDR memory, and high-speed communication interfaces is strongly preferred. Familiarity with SoC FPGA architecture leveraging AI and ML acceleration, as well as proficiency in Python or MATLAB for simulation and analysis, is a plus. Candidates with experience supporting products from prototype through volume production and a foundational understanding of inertial navigation systems will stand out.
